SCRIPT FRENZY DAY 4
By the end of today, I need to be at page 14.
I need your help this week! I'm making up the name of a coffee shop in the script. This coffee shop is kind of the source of some "magic" that happens in the story, so I need ideas for a name. This name should sound good, but also have a double meaning. Basically, at the end of my story, when the "Big Twist" happens and your brain goes "Oh, I get it. Wow I never saw that coming!", the coffee shop would have been a clue to let you know that something important was going on there. I was trying to find a reference in Shakespeare but no luck. Maybe a Greek word or something? I don't know. I need ideas.

ReplyDeleteI'm SO excited about your progress in week 1 of Script Frenzy. You can do this wondergirl!
Hmmmmm, titles and names are always hard for me when writing and take me sometimes the longest (I'll spend days in baby name books). You've made it a bit harder since it needs to be tied to an ending "twist" that I don't know of yet. So good luck there.
But here are some brainstorming thoughts that might spark something back in you:

The Question Coffeehouse (as in "That is the Question)
BTW, Violet was a name we considered. My great grandmother was named Violet and I love it.

How about Caliban's Brew

Caliban speaking to his master Prospero in The Tempest Act I Sc II says:
"When thou cam'st first,
Thou strok'st me and made much of me, wouldst give me
Water with berries in't, and teach me..."
there are some who believe this was a reference to coffee. Other's disagree. What's new about that eh? Scholarly disagreement about Shakespeare. :)
But there is more to my reasoning. The Tempest is a play about story itself. The magic of it. And the power of language to create what is, not just describe it. Which seems to fit your themes: a story writer whose characters live etc.
Prospero's Plume is another option. With plume having a double meaning: a writer's feather pen and the plume of water in the tempest Prospero called up to set his pageant in motion.
Prospero is a book lover, a man enamored of reason and yet a magician of sorts. But in his day reason seemed magical to those yet unfamiliar with its methods.
Late in the play Prospero equates life with a pageant:
"..the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep."
Other ways of leaving your clue besides the name of the shop would be to have it's decor reflect the Shakespeare play or theme you want to emphasize whether it be The Tempest or no.
Congrats on your excellent progress. I love your concept and your setting. I have loved Ashland since I went to college at SOSC in the late 80s. I envy Violet her apartment!!
I also love Shakespeare and have woven references and quotes into my own fiction. Even have one character who speaks only in Shakespeare quotes that are yet relevant and in context to the circumstances.
BTW I live near Phoenix and am doing Frenzy too. Have replied on the Forum Anyone in Southern Oregon. My Frenzy name is joywite.
