PLAN B

I'm usually a PLAN B girl.

Plan B is never my first choice, but it's an acceptable second. Plan B can be a good thing. It means I'm flexible and willing to adjust my plans in the face of change, right? But I'm learning that living in Plan B can suck the life right out of me. And you.

You know how it goes. Sometimes the fire goes out. Choices are made. Words are said. Hearts are broken. Money disappears. Doors are closed, or even slammed in our faces. So we go to Plan B. And the next day we wake up and decide to not ever make a Plan A again, because we're afraid of being hurt or disappointed. We decide it's okay to live and breathe Plan B all day every day. Even if we know it's sucking the life right out of us. Every. Single. Day.

Plan A means sacrifice and focus and faith. But we're just so tired. Weak. Devastated.

Plan B doesn't make me look in the mirror. Plan B doesn't make me risk anything that's important. Plan B doesn't call me to love beyond myself. Plan B tells me this is good enough. Plan B whispers that Plan A will never come, and blurs any memory of what my life was meant to be.

I begin to live in the comfort and security of Plan B. It moves in and settles in at my dinner table, on my couch, in my bedroom. It becomes my constant companion.
And before I know it, I'm wilting. I'm going through the motions of a mediocre life and most of the time I'm numb to it. I want to lose myself in the stories on TV or online or in books, because my real life story is too raw and exhausting.

We were not created to be Plan B people.  We were created for something more. Something wild and true and beyond what we're settling for.

It's time to break up with Plan B. Let's make it a clean break. Change our number. Move and leave Plan B no forwarding address. Go after Plan A. Dream up a Plan A that makes our hearts pound and our heads spin. Start with the little things and the big things and move on to everything in between. Love with action and in truth. Turn off the television, go breathe the fresh air, run hard to the God who lifts our heads. Risk. Speak truth. Remember what it's like to dream.

And while we're at it, grab the hand of the person next to us.

“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:5-6 NIV

  2. Yes and amen. God has called you to more, created you for more than a bland Plan B life, Jenna. Here's my challenge to you, be of courage and write down the desires of your heart-your Plan A. Ask for it with confidence and pursue it with a right heart before God. He has purposed a plan for you and it will stand.

    Isaiah 14:24
The LORD Almighty has sworn, "Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand."
